Code in Place Week 0

Last week was Week 0 for Code in Place – the week before course starts. There were two mandatory training sessions for Section Leaders:

  • Welcome to Section Leading

    • A kickoff event to cover essentials of section leading for Code in Place

    • The Goal of the program:

      • Everyone completes, all 10,000 students

      • Inspire students to want to continue learning coding

    • Fun facts:

      • 12,000 people applied for Section Leader

        • 700 people were selected

      • 10,000 students accepted

      • Grading is auto-grading

      • Section Leaders get certificates too!

  • Live Section Practice

    • Head TA lead training going over best practices

    • Broke into small groups to present 15 mins of live coding

      • Feedback from small group

      • Great to hear how others explain the same concepts

I also had to select what day and time my Section was going to be. I ended up choosing Thursdays at 9am PST. And now I have own section section in the Code in Place site:

It's been fun customizing my Section and starting a weekly section topic to foster connection community for this section.

Something I would love support with is getting great and simple virtual icebreaker suggestions.

Code in Place has tons of resources listed in the Section Leader Training section the cover items like:

  • Zoom basics

  • Pro tips for great teaching

  • Diversity, inclusion, and equity in your section

  • Key elements for student learning

  • Why Curiosity?

  • Building On Ideas

There is also a Teacher forum, which has been a great place to ask questions and see what other Section Leaders have found interesting or resources they’ve discovered.

I’m looking forward to starting to teach this week!
